How to change "root" password in RHEL Linux If Forgotten

If the root password is ever changed and forgotten on a RHEL Linux system please do the following to change it.

1. Turn the system on or reset it.

2. When you get the GRUB menu, press 'e'.

3. Use the down arrow on the keyboard to highlight the second line that starts with kernel ...

4. Press 'e' again and then you will get to edit the line.

5. Insert a space at the end of the line and type '1' or 'S'.

6. Press enter.

7. Press 'b' to boot into single user mode as root.

8. At the command prompt type passwd root.

9. reboot the system and use the new password.
