Later i saw one of my friend is using ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy with fantastic visual desktop effect. It is so attractive that i couldn't wait to upgrade my 6.06 to Gutsy. After many times trying and googling, i found that there is no way to upgrade directly from 6.06LTS to Gutsy. (Maybe there are some ways, but i am not sure how) So this Monday afternoon, i went to download the Gutsy CD, which only took my about 10 minutes. I was so happy that my laptop could also have the same cool Gutsy visual desktop effect and many many other features soon.

But after successfully installing Gutsy, when i first time reboot it, problems occurred... My screen went totally black and no matter what control key i typed, the screen just didn't move at all until i long press the power button to shut down my laptop. Restart, but same problem occurred. Frustrated... I was doubting if i partitioned my disk correct or not. So i switched to Xp, and began googling. Some said, if i used the ubuntu6.06 before i should have a clean format the 6.06 before install other OS. I was puzzled. As far as i know after u choose the partition to install the OS, the installing would have a clean format of the partition before installing the new OS. So this should not be the problem. But i still tried... Since i believe that whenever there is no way to solve a problem, trying is the best. So I manually deleted the ubuntu partition from xp and format that partition, then installed ubuntu again.20 minutes later, i reboot my laptop, same situation happened. Although it appeared black screen, i could feel that there was something running that i couldn't see. So i waited and waited... 4 or 5 minutes later, ubuntu log in screen appeared. Hooray, not bad, at least i could go to the log in screen and i knew that the problem was long start up time and black screen on boot. After using ubuntu for 2 or 3 minutes, ubuntu hanged. Frustrated and exhausted...

Now i knew that the problem i should solve are long start up time, black screen on boot and gutsy hangs, which i used for the key word for search on google.

So i decided to keep ubuntu there first. Go and try my luck in google and ubuntu forum. See if i can found any solution there. Many hours later, i found a solution for the black screen. Although the solutions did not directly respond to my problem, i was doubting that my problem was indeed caused by the usplash.conf file. So i followed the step and really solved the problem. Here is how to solve this problem:
go to ubuntu recovery mode
sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf
change the xres and yres to the corresponding screen resolution of your computer.

But gutsy hanging problem still frustrated me a lot. Googling didnt give me any answer. In order to found out why and how, I have manually reboot my ubuntu for around 20+ times... It hurt my computer, but i had no choice. After changing something, which i forgot, my computer hangs randomly, sometimes 4 or 5 minutes, sometimes it could last for hours. Some suggests changing ATI Driver to fglrx Driver, i tried out, but maybe my installing fglrx driver is not correct. After chaning to fglrx driver my computer couldnt display correctly, so i changed back the driver in X11/xorg.conf back to ATI. But the easiest solution is to disable the visual desktop effect, change it to none. This will solve the hanging problem. So it was caused by the computer graphics card or maybe ATI driver. I am going to try installing fglrx driver again and see if i could give a better solution for this problem.
