This artical just describes the case I met in my work, and provides the reference to same issue.
Recently, we used VMware to create a virutal Linux system, which used a customed Linux distribution. Our target on the virtual machine is to test some applications which playback the media files with miscellaneous sample rates, chanels. Unfortunately, we met an issue when testing the audio files with 8K sample rate, which a noise occurs and we could not hear any normal tune. We also tested these files with other virtual machine installed other Linux distributions, such as Redhat, and Debian， and everything was OK when using the internal player of system plays the audio file, while using our applications still failed. We tested the files with our applications on real Linux machine, they works well with the audio file.
We checked our customed Linux distribution and other distributions in VMware, and found that ASAL sound driver is used in all distributions. We tried to change the sound driver to OSS driver, then tested our applications. It's strange that we found that a normal tune can be heard.
We have tried this several times, and the results are identical. Now we can make a decision that there is a flaw for VMware to support playback 8K sample rate audio file.
