Gentoo Linux是一套通用的、快捷的、完全免费的Linux发行，它面向开发人员和网络职业人员。与其他发行不同的是，Gentoo Linux拥有一套先进的包管理系统叫作Portage。在BSD ports的传统中，Portage是一套真正的自动导入系统，然而Gentoo里的Portage是用Python编写的，并具它有很多先进的特性，包括文件依赖、精细的包管理、OpenBSD风格的虚拟安装，安全卸载，系统框架文件、虚拟软件包、配置文件管理等等。//这个版本我有个2006年的版本。这个版本，我觉得有个特点，就是所有的安装都可以自己定制，所有的代码都公开，没有一点隐藏的感觉。只要你的网络好的话，完全可以先安装一个内核，再安装其他软件包。呵呵。我现在还在用Ubuntu7.04,过段时间会考虑安装这个版本。
Gentoo Linux 2007.0 has been released: "After several delays, the Gentoo Release Engineering team is proud to announce the release of Gentoo Linux 2007.0, code named 'Secret Sauce'. This release includes a completely rewritten version of the Gentoo Linux Installer on the AMD64 and x86 live CD and live DVD images. It also includes GNOME 2.16.2, KDE 3.5.5, Xfce 4.4, Mozilla Firefox 2.0.0.3, OpenOffice.org 2.1.0, and the 2.6.19 Linux kernel. Updated hardware support is among the highlights of the x86 release. Besides the many updated office and productivity packages x86 also brings an update to glibc 2.5. OpenBSD 4.1 has been released: "We are pleased to announce the official release of OpenBSD 4.1. This is our 21st release on CD-ROM (and 22nd via FTP). We remain proud of OpenBSD's record of ten years with only two remote holes in the default install. As in our previous releases, 4.1 provides significant improvements, including new features, in nearly all areas of the system." OpenBSD 4.1 is available for two new platforms (landisk and sparc64), provides hardware support for many new devices, including many Ethernet and wireless network cards, and includes a range of new tools and various functionality improvements. Connie Sieh has announced the release of Scientific Linux 5.0, a distribution rebuilt from source packages for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and enhanced with a variety of additional applications: "Scientific Linux 5.0 i386 is now available." Fedora项目是一份由Red Hat策划的开放开发项目，它向普通参与者开放并由精英管理者领导，沿着一系列项目目标而前进。Fedora项目的目标是与Linux社区协作，只从开放源码软件来创建一份完整的、通用的操作系统。其开发过程是以公开论坛的形式进行的。项目将按时间计划，每年作两到三次Fedora Core的发布，并提供一份公开的发布日程表。Red Hat工程组将继续参与Fedora Core的开发，并且将比以往更多地邀请和鼓励外界的参与。通过采用这样一种更加开放的过程，我们希望能提供一份更加符合自由软件理念并且对开放源码社区更具吸引力的操作系统。//我上次下载了一个FC7,但文件是6.91版的。可能是开发版本吧。安装时连正式的说明都没有。不过，安装过程很顺利，界面比6好看得多，对硬盘和显卡的识别也提高很多。等正式发行后，我再下载来使用吧。RedHat的发行版都很专业。但fc这些版本，我觉得有点急于求成，开发周期是短了，但兼容性不太好。其实没必要几个月就更新一次。像debian那样，开发最安全，最稳定的版本才比较好。呵呵。最近的debian4.0也出了。等我测试完ubuntu7.04就安装debian4.0。这个版本是有图形界面安装的。所有比以前的版本好用很多。
