This time I installed my new Ubuntu(8.10) guest os on Vmwware player instead of upgrade from 8.04, because I want to write what have done in the processing and maybe useful for the next time installation.

Resources:
1. download iso file from ubuntu office website. like ubuntu-8.10-desktop-i386.iso
2. download free latest version of VMWare player and workstation from VMWare website.

Installation:
1. extract linux.iso from Workstation version.
VMWare-Tools, which was in old version VMWare player, is only available in VMWare workstation in the latest release(WS6.05 and VM player 2.5). So we need install Workstation first and copy linux.iso file out to somewhere. Then uninstall it. Finally install VMware player free and no experied limit.

2. create Vmware configration vmx file, from VMX builder or easyvmx website. attached is my vmx file.

3. installl Ubuntu
Modified vmx file to read iso file from vitrial CDROM. Easy install from prompt message.

4. install VMware-Tools for Ubuntu
Modified vmx file to read linux.iso to install it.

First copy the VMware Tools from the mounted iso to the temporary folder
sudo cp /media/cdrom1/VMwareTools-xxxxx.tar.gz /tmp/

Afterwards switch to the temporary folder and untar the VMware Tools:
cd /tmp/
sudo tar xvfz VMwareTools-xxxxx.tar.gz

Next switch to the folder with the unpacked files and execute the installer:
cd vmware-tools-distrib/
sudo ./vmware-install.pl
Now you will be asked a few questions relating to installation paths etc. Choose the default value every time (simply hit enter).

GOT vsock build error, will fix it later.

5. all done, modifed vmx file umount iso from cdrom, restart new ubuntu.

TroubleShooting:
1. ShareFolder with XP HOST, because no networking at the moment.
Setup in vmx file and create link or new mountpoint to Desktop/Shared
sudo ln -s /mnt/hgfs/HostFolder/ /home/xxx/Desktop/Shared

2. display, select what you want from System->Preferences->Sreen Resolution.

3. mouse issue( hard to cross guest and host screen, displace mouse when you click).

download and install fixed deb from here
modifed your /ect/X11/xorg.conf , attached is mine.

4. copy/past between host and guest
run vmware-tools from startup.
Add vmwware-user in Startup Programs. System->Prefernecs->sessions-> Add. /usr/bin/vmware-user

so far so good, but we need networking (vsock) now.
5. Networking (vsock)
rebuild vsock module only, install it. details
DO USE 'Bridged" in "Network Adapter" in vmware player.

NOW all done and I can restart Ubuntu 8.10 and get my network working.....

Next step will be move my home dir to another partition...
