As in Microsoft, My last project is Remote Desktop Connect 2.0 on Mac OS X, in other words, I have some experiences on UNIX kernel, but when I start to use the Debian Linux, I find if you want to know more about the Unix/Linux kernal, you should better move you OS from Windows to Linux, if you are not very farmiliar with the Linux, you can install Windows & Linux, and use the GRUB to graid the 2 system.
For Install the Linux system, make sure you have 2 partition, 1 is the main partition for the linux system with the EX2 format, and another is for the SWAP. Download the Debian linux(or any other, such as Red Hat, Ubutu, Solaris), For Debian linux, you can download it on http://www.debian.org
The drivers of the linux system is the big problem after we have installed system, you may feel very confuse about how to install the drivers, but fortunately, we have GOOGLE, you can find the person who have the same question with you, and get the answer you want, event you need to combile the driver code to install it, it has the detail steps there to help you do that.

33.4% Linux OS on mobile use / 33% on Windows mobile
More and More person are involve in the Open Source tide.
I think no one want to loss this business opportunities on Linux, and so, if you don't think you will stay in Windows business always, you'd better to know more about the linux, you will know more about the operator system here.
