My installation of Ubuntu Linux 8.04

My installation of Ubuntu Linux 8.04

It took me quite long time to download the latest version of Unbuntu CD image, that is 8.04, called Hardy Heron internally, from it's Chinese homepage.

It also took me  much time to setup the Ubuntu Linux correctly on my company PC. Of course, the installation was not for my work but for personal purposes. And everything was done in secret when I was off duty. Aha!

Not like Fedora 8 Linux, the setup process of Ubuntu 8.04 actually took more time, and not that easy and convenient as many voices from Linux forums.

Firstly, during the OS installation, I deleted one 30GB logical partition which prepared for Linux. Finished creating some partitions for Linux, it's long time for installing the software packages then. It spent me at least 50 minutes for waiting to finish the installation. Although I wasn't furious, I was really not happy, since my computer was quite up-to-date.

After software packages installation, setup for GRUB continued, and I was asked whether I wanted to write the MBR (Main Boot Records) on the first bootable partition which was (sda0, 0) and used for Windows XP. I was afraid of making mistakes to crash the Windows OS which is required for my job. So I didn't accept the choice and just let it save the record on /boot partition (sda0, 8). And then, the whole installation for Ubuntu was finished. Also then, my misery was begun, because after the PC's reboot, nothing was happened but enter the Windows XP system. I was regretted for my refusal of writing MBR to the first partition.

Fortunately, I thought of the OS rescue method. But, unfortunately,  it didn't work or it's too hard for me to use it easily and correctly. So the setup of Ubuntu had to proceed once more.

Eventually, thank goddess, the legendary version, Ubuntu 8.04, has been setup correctly.

Experienced with Ubuntu, I didn't think that Ubuntu 8.04 was much better than Fedora 8. What I wanted to say was that they both did little thing while most things were done by Linux, GNOME or KDE, and so on.

I am happy that Linux has been more and more stable, more people start to use it and more companies begin to support it. It's not convenient for me without an efficient Chinese input method now, and I can only write this article in English. Further more, my Firefox was quite ugly because it's main language was not Simplified Chinese but Traditional Chinese. All these, definitely, won't affect my passion with Linux.

Wish Linux grow healthy and be more miraculous.
